How to control Rhinoceros Beetles in Coconut farms?

Rhinoceros Beetles in Coconut Trees

Rhinoceros beetles are named for horn-like projections on and around the males heads. They are mostly black, gray or red in color and some are covered in soft hairs

Rhinoceros beetle adults damage palms by boring into the centre of the crown, injure the young growing fronds and feed on them. As they bore into the crown, they cut through the developing leaves.

The hole can be seen on the stem with chewed up fibres protruding out. Many times reddish brown liquid can be seen oozing out from the hole

Adults Rhinoceros beetles can live as long as 9 months and gravid females lay 50-100 eggs throughout their lifetime.

Simple and best way to keep Rhinoceros Beetles away is application of Sea Salt for the Coconut tree.

You can take 2 to 3 kgs of Sea Salt and apply across the fronds of the Coconut Tree

Sea Salt is rich in sodium chloride and it repels the Rhinoceros Beetles away from the Coconut Tree

Also Application of common salt as fertilizer is considered to be most effective and economical to increase copra weight and copra yield

We need to broadcast 1.5 kg of common salt in the entire area of the soil surface around the base of the coconut tree up to a distance of 6 feets from the base.

This application should be done every 3 months for the coconut tree so that the tree is free from Rhinoceros Beetle damages.
